More 999 stupidity

Gravatar of this user

From news.bbc.co.uk …

Time to call an end to free calls to the emergency services, I feel. If you waste Police, Ambulance or Fire Service time then you should be charged; and not only financially but in court for damn stupidity! Currently if your car is in a Road Traffic Accident your insurance will be charged an Ambulance fee. About time that the costs of the imbeciles who do not understand the meaning of "emergency" and cry wolf should be made to pay the cost of their stupidity.

Disaster narrowly averted

Although it really shouldn't be season-specific, I associate the end of the year with a nice Stilton and a glass or two of proper Port. I started on the Stilton while I was out of town visiting, but now I'm back in London I was about to spoon out another piece when disaster struck! No Port!

Sorting through my drinks cupboard led to plenty of Cognac, Whisky ( Laphroaig, Scapa, and 'visitor'), Rums, Vodkas and liqueurs, but Port was obvious by its absence.

With great relief, however, a visit to the wine racks in the hall presented me with a bottle of white Port and an unopened Tawny Superior, Quinta do Infantado, which I must have put there after my last visit to Lisbon, which means it has spent quite some time in bottle — about nine years in fact! Anyway, with Port and Stilton alongside my chair, and a movie showing on the television, I shall now take my leave of you …

Icelanders' struggle means CCP may leave

Gravatar of this user

From www.guardian.co.uk …

CCP Games — developers of Eve Online — might be forced to quit Iceland because of the current economic climate. The Icelandic government is restricting access to outside investors and CCP, which also has offices in the USA and China and receives pretty much all its income in USD and EUR, needs those investors to help develop new projects. These include the much-trailed 'World of Darkness' MMORPG as well as other projects which were only hinted at during presentations at the recent FanFest in Reykjavik. As a player of their games, and as a member of their first player-elected panel — the Council of Stellar Management — I know how much being an Icelandic company is part of their ethos, indeed the first thing CCP did when the CSM went there for the initial face-to-face meeting was to take us out into the countryside, to the seat of Iceland's first parliament. I wish CCP, and all Icelanders, a better and more prosperous New Year.

Death nell for VHS

Gravatar of this user
I have somewhere around 450+ VHS video tapes, nearly all recorded with stuff I thought was 'important' off-air during the 80s and 90s. I still even pick one out at random occasionally to watch a spot of history — the closing hours of Thames TV, for example, or some particularly fine documentaries that are unlikely to ever be repeated. Now, ars technica tells us that the final distributor of these holders of wonder is throwing in the towel at the end of the holiday season. The era ended some years ago when the DVD replaced the pre-recorded VHS tape, but let's all shed another tear anyway … For the too-young amongst you, they were box-shaped pieces of plastic with magnetic tape inside, used for recording or time-shifting television programmes. 'VHS' was the format which won the marketing battle over 'Betamax' which was, allegedly, better technically.
