Pixel Punishments

From www.guardian.co.uk …

The media today have been reporting the case of a Japanese woman arrested on Wednesday at her home in southern Miyazaki and taken over 600 miles (1,000km) to Sapporo because she hacked her virtual ex-partner's account on an internet game — MapleStory — after he dumped her. The (real) man behind the account hadn't met her in real life but had dumped her in-game and she took the unexpected 'divorce' so badly that she deleted his avatar (or 'murdered' it, according to some of the more effusive press!) This comes after a recent story about virtual theft in the Netherlands on Massively.com where two young boys — 14 and 15 — were convicted of stealing an amulet in Runescape. This latter case included a physical attack in real life on the article's previous owner, so completely correct that they are being punished, but the court's statement that "These virtual goods are goods (under Dutch law) so this is theft." is something to consider carefully. Already various jurisdictions have made statements that they are considering whether in-game (totally virtual) transactions should be subject to (real life) taxation. Aren't we just going too far though? I see my time in EVE-Online and other games as a pastime not a job. Sapporo is also the brand name of my favourite beer

Íslendingar eru ekki hryðjuverkamenn!

These Icelanders are not terrorists I've only visited Iceland once so far — in June this year — but will also be there in a couple of weeks. And everyone I've met there has been friendly and pleasant. Last month though the UK Government used the Anti-Terrorism, Crime and Security Act 2001 to effectively allege that Icelanders were terrorists in order to safeguard / steal / acquire / retain the funds of the Icelandic banks in their UK subsidiaries. I know plenty of my UK friends think this is overkill and an unacceptable slur on the Icelanders — even if their Government has reneged on a contract — and I personally have apologised to Icelandic friends. Today I was pointed at a website — www.indefence.is — where an on-line petition to UK PM Brown is being created. Give them your support! Delete as you prefer

0-1,050mph in 40 seconds

From news.bbc.co.uk …

When you see the boys on Top Gear going on about the acceleration of the latest cars as 0-60 in whatever few seconds RAF pilot Andy Green — who already has taken a car to 763mph — is now planning to go over one thousand miles per hour. In a car!. Rocket-assisted, the Typhoon-Eurofighter jet engine powered 'Blodhound' aims to shatter the current record in 2011.

Your chair, Sir

From www.telegraph.co.uk …

Giant oak chair Sitting on Dartmoor in Devon is this 20 ft (6.5m) high "Giant's Chair". Built by artist Henry Bruce it is currently threatened with being demolished by the local planning authority as he didn't get planning permission when it was raised two years ago. Makes me recall the similar-sized chair by some Italian artist that spent the summer on Hampstead heath a few years ago …

Compare and Contrast

Colin PowellIn the USA today, former Secretary of State and General Colin Powell (Republican) has endorsed Senator Barack Obama (Democrat). This cross-party support is seen as good, indeed showing that a former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff supports him is great support for Obama to be the next Commander-in-Chief. Though I can't help wondering whether open cross-party support for Lembit Opik or Ros Scott would be so well appreciated. If Ken Clarke declared for Ros, or Frank Field for Lembit, would it sway opinions? move votes? Somehow I believe that on this side of the pond we look with caution and suspicion at whom someone declares as their supporters, facebook not withstanding!

Another module

Gravatar of this user
Say hello to another Chyrp module, 'ReadTwitter'. Last week I added in the — JavaScript — code as made available by Twitter to download items from your feed and display them on your site. Thing is, I personally often have scripting locked out on security grounds and I'm sure others do too. Taking into account that Twitter's code also includes the personal replies I make to other people in addition to my own posts and I realised I needed to write some code that would do the retrieve and display code on my server. Hence ReadTwitter! It retrieves the feed, disposes of the direct replies and caches the results (meaning that if Twitter is unavailable the 'latest' still is). Because I'm still not happy with the stability of Chyrp 2.0 RC2 yet, this module, like all of mine released so far, is presently for RC1 installations only.
